Nose Stud Post Length: What Does 6 mm Actually Measure?

RSS

You have found a nose stud you love, but the measurements need a second look. The diamond might be 2 mm, the post 18G and the length 6 mm. Each number describes a different part of the piece. Understanding them makes it much easier to compare designs and ask for the fit you need.

Start with the post length recommended for your piercing, then check how the maker measures it for that particular backing style. A familiar number on a different design may describe a different part of the jewelry.

Keep these three measurements separate

  • Post length describes the section intended to sit through the piercing, with the exact measurement points depending on the backing style.
  • Gauge describes the thickness of the post. For example, the Studio Meme flat back studs linked below have an 18G post, listed as 1 mm thick.
  • Diamond or decorative top size describes the visible design. A 2 mm diamond measurement refers to the stone, while the surrounding setting adds its own dimensions.

The complete stud also has an overall height. Measuring from the top of the diamond to the very end of the backing includes parts that do not sit within the piercing. That total can change with the setting even when the wearable post length stays the same.

For more detail on thickness, see our nose ring gauge guide.

What does a 6 mm flat back post mean?

For a flat back, compare the wearable shaft between the front and the backing, using the maker’s measurement diagram or description. Keep the height of the diamond setting and the thickness of the back disc separate from that measurement.

Our four prong natural diamond flat back stud is listed with an 18G post and a 6 mm post length. The diamond size is a separate choice. Selecting a larger diamond does not turn that listed 6 mm post into a longer one.

The bezel natural diamond flat back stud also lists an 18G post and a 6 mm length. These two designs are useful examples: you can compare how the front of the jewelry looks while keeping the stated post dimensions the same.

A 6 mm listing is a specification for that piece. The length appropriate for you depends on your anatomy and piercing placement. The Association of Professional Piercers emphasizes choosing dimensions suited to the individual piercing. A professional piercer can confirm your measurements before you order.

Changing backing styles? Check the measuring points

With an L shape, the useful length to discuss is the straight section from the underside of the front setting to the bend. The short turned section inside the nostril is another part of the design. Tell the maker which segment you have measured.

For example, our prong set natural diamond stud with backing choices offers bone, L shape and U shape options. When comparing them, confirm the length for your selected backing instead of relying on the product title alone.

A fishtail requires another distinction. Its long straight stem is supplied so it can be shaped for a custom fit. The unshaped stem length is not a ready comparison with the wearable length of a finished flat back. Ask a professional piercer to handle the fitting rather than trying to recreate the bend yourself.

What if the listed lengths do not suit you?

If your current post feels too short or too long, have the fit checked before choosing another size. A photo can show how a piece sits, but angle and scale make it unreliable for precise measurements.

If you already know the length you need and it is missing from the options, contact us before ordering. Tell us the exact product, backing, gauge and requested length. We can check whether that combination can be made and whether it changes the price or production time. Custom possibilities vary by design.

A simple checklist before you order

  • Save the product link and select the front design or diamond size you want.
  • Confirm the backing style, including left or right nostril where the option requires it.
  • Check the gauge against your current jewelry specifications or your piercer’s advice.
  • Write down the wearable length and exactly where it was measured.
  • Confirm any custom request before checkout, including the expected production time.

If you are unsure, send us those details. A clear specification gives us a much better starting point than a request for a stud that is simply “smaller.”

Quick questions

Does a thicker gauge mean a longer post?

Gauge and post length are separate measurements. Check both in the selected product options.

Can I order the same length in a different backing?

Confirm the measuring points first. A finished flat back, an L shape, and an unshaped fishtail cannot be compared by total length alone.

Should I change a new piercing myself to test the size?

Ask your piercer to assess the fit and advise when a change is appropriate. There is no need to experiment with different lengths to work out your measurements.
